Intangible Cultural Heritage – Manual Glass Manufacture
“Manual Production of mouth-blown hollow and flat glass” has been accepted as a category of intangible cultural heritage in the nation-wide list. In this way an expert committee of the German UNESCO Commission, with the support of the KMK (Conference of Ministers of Culture) and Minister of State, Monika Grütters, has officially acknowledged the high cultural significance of this challenging craft, requiring long years of dedicated study – significance with regard to design, technical applications and art. Encouraged by this recognition, experts from glassworks, museums and state institutions in Germany, Finland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Turkey are developing a strategy for official recognition at an international level. In May 2019 a strategy meeting in Zwiesel brought together all supporters of this endeavour at the town’s specialist glass school.
