Portrait | Silvia Lobenhofer-Albrecht
Silvia Lobenhofer-Albrecht is a freelance artist working in painting, installation, and glass. She lives and works in the Nuremberg region.
Her work is shaped by the conviction that creative achievement always arises from the interplay of creativity and craftsmanship—an approach that is also rooted in her studies in textile design. Glass opens up a special variety of expressive possibilities for her. She combines the fragile, smooth material with contrasting elements such as metal or textiles, creating compelling contrasts. In her works, clear glass elements meet mud-colored, rough jute fabric. The contrasting surfaces enter into a kind of symbiosis: the evenly crocheted surfaces evoke coral structures, appearing organic and alive, while the glass introduces a sense of coolness and distance. Sparingly used glass in combination with a dominant textile body radiates a sense of something worthy of protection; at the same time, this protective function is called into question by the fragility of the material. This ambivalence lies at the heart of her works: they remind us of how vulnerable our environment is and how urgently it must be preserved.
Nature is always the artist’s source of inspiration. She is currently exploring the theme of “water”—an element that symbolizes life, movement, and change, but also danger and loss. In this ambivalence, she finds a central image for our time: for her, water becomes a symbol of the fragile balance between preservation and destruction, between beauty and threat, and thus a consistent expression of her artistic stance.
