FORM COLOR FUNCTION
The Glass Museum Frauenau presents new acquisitions from the Birgit and Dieter Schaich Collection, focusing on molded glass from seven centuries. Most of the exhibits have not yet been published and offer insights that go beyond the German perspective.
Divided into twelve chapters, visitors can discover glass objects related to domestic life, alchemy, and pharmacy, representing a wide variety of forms: beakers, jugs, pitchers, goblets, “Alpine” bottles, and underwater finds.
The oldest piece is a Nuppenbecher (a beaker with applied blobs) from the 12th/13th century, believed to have originated in the Near East, with a shape familiar from German medieval beakers. A jug dated 1572, painted with enamel and mounted with a lid, also bears diamond-engraved inscriptions of its owner and his drinking companions. The use of a cucumber-shaped vessel remains unexplained.
An exhibition catalogue is available, featuring images and descriptions of over 330 objects, along with in-depth texts on distinctive forms and groups. The volume is available at the museum for €49.00.
