A Look at the Certificate Program in Museum Education
Participants in the 2026 Lower Bavaria Museum Education Certificate Program have been visiting numerous museums in the region since February. The range of sites spans archaeological collections, local history and open-air museums, and the Memorial to the Victims of Nazi Euthanasia in Mainkofen, vividly demonstrating the diversity of approaches to museum education today.
A particular focus is on different forms of education. In addition to traditional guided tour formats, it became clear how powerful nonverbal aspects are—that is, what is conveyed through expression, atmosphere, or body language.
In March, we visited the Frauenau Glass Museum, which is a member of glasspool e. V. There, we gained insights into both the exhibitions of modern, traditional, and antique glass art and the partly historic glassworking workshops. Particularly valuable was the opportunity to contribute our own perspectives: Together with museum educator Barbara Stadler, we discussed how the tour through the workshop areas could be structured even more clearly and made more accessible to visitors.
We were particularly impressed by the variety of educational approaches. For example, the museum works with “Durandl,” the glassworks’ mascot—a narrative character who guides children in particular through the exhibition and its content. Such formats demonstrate how topics related to glass can be conveyed in a vivid and accessible way.
In addition, digital formats such as the audio guide and the virtual glass museum offer new ways to engage with the collection. They invite visitors to explore the Glass Museum with in-depth background knowledge, whether on-site, on the go, or from home.
The visit to the Frauenau Glass Museum has once again demonstrated how diversely glass can be presented as a material—and how important it is to present content in a way that reaches different target audiences.
